Hello

Nicholas O’Neill is a Cambridge-based artist who has been developing his architecturally focused watercolour and ink paintings for the past three years.

My Story

Nicholas studied industrial design at Central Saint Martins in London before working on a range of products in Cambridge and London-based consultancies.

His work then took him to Phnom Penh in Cambodia where he worked for over 5 years on a range of products within the development sector. In conjunction with USAID Nicholas also developed and led a range of projects with aspiring local designers to bring their product ideas from concept to market.

It was within this intoxicating city where French colonial buildings mingle with exquisite ‘New Khmer’ modernist architecture and traditional Buddhist stupas that Nicholas first started to paint with watercolour. Inexorably under threat from rampant growth but still enduring, its buildings and vistas offer up a paradox of transience and permanence - and to an aspiring artist a great inspiration.

Drawing on technical drawing skills honed as an industrial designer, Nicholas endeavours to use ink lines that are true to the laws of perspective and offer a relatively pure construct with which to fill with fine pigment. Operating within the space between hyperrealism and unconstrained colour, Nicholas uses watercolour to convey scenes that are both bold and lonely.
